The building of a deck, which is on the floor joists with the wooden or composite board (decking) standing on post foundations, to create a cozy sitting area. Most often deck is attached to the house, but sometimes – it is a freestanding structure. The deck is ideal to accommodate a garden lighting, furniture such as a table, chairs and lounge chairs for relaxing outdoors.
Deck covered by wooden planking is nice for walking barefoot, as opposed to a cold concrete paving slabs. In addition, because between the floor construction and the ground there is a layer of air for ventilation, there is a nice warm surface. Decking boards usually have a gap of 1/8 to 1/4 inch. This is necessary for the thermal shrinking compensation, and improved ventilation of air space under the floor that is absolutely necessary to prevent the formation of mold, mildew, and rot. In addition, gaps improve water drainage from the deck during and after the rain. The deck can be covered by a roof. It will provide protection from the sun in the summer, but still allow you to continue outdoor activities when suddenly starts to rain.
The roof can be designed as a retractable mechanism (shatters). This will adjust the amount of the sunshine on the deck and remove the roof completely off-season. Retractable roof can be either manually operated or automatic. Also, deck roof can be covered by curtain fabric to create additional comfort effect.
WHAT THE GOOD SIZE FOR THE DECK?
The deck size selected on the basis of a comfortable, spacious enough location of furniture, and the number of people at the same time having a rest on the deck. Usually a few people enough recreation 12×18 feet. The pretty original decision may be placing a deck on the lake, near the fountain or tree – while achieving the good aesthetic effect.
WHAT THE BEST MATERIALS FOR THE DECK?
Very convenient material for the flooring can be composite boards. This material is obtained by extrusion, consisting of 50% wood and 50% of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Composite has a neat appearance and is manufactured with the characteristic texture that mimics the surface of the tree. However, as compared with wood, it has several advantages:
- The surface of the decking is completely free from the splinters. This is so because of the uniform anisotropic structure of the material, in contrast to the classical lumber.
- Composite is processed just as easily as an ordinary tree, and very easy to use. He is well for sawing, drilling, and sanding, suitable for mounting screws.
- The material is flexible, so its installation is convenient. Despite the use of plastic, so it is harmless to 100% as a tree.
- When handling heated and it also does not emit any harmful substances; It does not contain formaldehyde.
- Composite decking is very durable and resistant. Its service life is several decades, which is much more than a wood. Composite is water, insects, temperature changes and humidity resistant.
